News
Ottawa, August 9, 2025 — Nearly 30 seniors gathered at the Carlingwood Retirement Community on Saturday afternoon for an engaging and practical lecture on digital safety and security, delivered by Dr. Jamal Alsharif, President of the Humans for Peace Institution.
The event, which began at 2:00 p.m., aimed to equip seniors with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the digital world safely. Dr. Alsharif covered a range of topics, including recognizing online scams, creating strong passwords, protecting personal information, and avoiding fraudulent emails and phone calls.
Throughout the presentation, seniors were encouraged to share their experiences and ask questions. Many attendees expressed concerns about recent scams targeting older adults, and Dr. Alsharif offered step-by-step advice on how to identify and report suspicious activity.
“This is about empowering seniors to feel confident and secure when they go online,” said Dr. Alsharif. “Technology offers incredible opportunities, but it’s important to understand the risks and how to protect yourself.”
As a gesture of appreciation, the Humans for Peace Institution also presented gifts to all participants, adding a warm and personal touch to the afternoon.
The lecture was part of a broader initiative by the Humans for Peace Institution to promote digital literacy among older adults. Attendees also received gifts, along with contact information for resources they can turn to for help.
Residents and staff at Carlingwood Retirement Community praised the session, noting its practical tips and approachable style. Plans are already being considered to bring similar sessions to other senior residences in the Ottawa area.
