1. Recognizing Online Scams & Phishing

  • What to know: How to identify suspicious emails, text messages, phone calls, and social media messages.

  • Red flags: Requests for money, urgent messages, spelling errors, unfamiliar links.

  • Prevention: Don’t click on unknown links or give out personal info; verify the source first.

2. Password Safety & Two-Factor Authentication

  • What to know: The importance of strong, unique passwords and how to manage them.

  • Tips: Use a password manager; enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for important accounts.

  • Risks: Using the same password across sites makes all your accounts vulnerable if one is hacked.

3. Safe Use of Social Media

  • What to know: How to protect your privacy and avoid oversharing.

  • Tips: Adjust privacy settings, don’t share birthdates, locations, or travel plans publicly.

  • Risks: Scammers may use personal info to create fake identities or target you.

4. Protecting Personal & Financial Information Online

  • What to know: Best practices when using online banking, shopping, and public Wi-Fi.

  • Tips: Shop only on secure (HTTPS) websites; never share banking details over email.

  • Risks: Identity theft, financial fraud, and account takeovers.

5. Recognizing and Reporting Fraud

  • What to know: What to do if you suspect a scam or fall victim to one.

  • Tips: Report to authorities (like the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or local police), contact your bank, and inform family or caregivers.

  • Empowerment: Knowing it's okay to ask for help and that early action reduces damage.

This impactful program is generously supported by the Government of Canada, underscoring a shared commitment to ensuring seniors are empowered with the tools and confidence they need to participate safely and independently in the digital age.

“We believe that education is a powerful tool in helping our senior community stay informed and protected,” said Dr. Jamal Alsharif, President of Humans for Peace Institution. “By bridging the digital divide, we also promote inclusion, independence, and peace of mind.”

The lecture series is free of charge and open to all seniors. Family members, caregivers, and community volunteers are also encouraged to attend, so they can support their loved ones more effectively.
