Empowering Seniors Against Fraud: A Five-Class Series by Humans for Peace Institution

In an age of growing digital interaction and evolving online threats, seniors are among the most vulnerable targets of fraud. To address this concern, Humans for Peace Institution, with generous funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program – Government of Canada, is proud to launch a five-part educational series on Fraud Awareness and Prevention for Seniors.

This free program will be delivered both online and in person, ensuring accessibility for all participants. The sessions will run weekly on September 20, 27 and October 4, 11, and 18, 2025.

Class Overview

1. Recognizing Online Scams & Phishing

Date: September 20, 2025
Participants will learn how to identify suspicious emails, text messages, phone calls, and social media messages.
Key takeaways:

  • Spot red flags: urgency, spelling mistakes, and unfamiliar links.

  • Don’t click on unknown sources or provide personal info.

  • Always verify before you trust.

2. Password Safety & Two-Factor Authentication

Date: September 27, 2025
This session teaches the importance of creating and managing strong, unique passwords.
Tips include:

  • Use a password manager.

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA).

  • Avoid reusing passwords across different sites.

3. Safe Use of Social Media

Date: October 4, 2025
Seniors will discover how to use social media wisely without compromising their privacy.
Topics include:

  • Adjusting privacy settings.

  • Avoiding public posts about personal details or travel plans.

  • Recognizing fake friend requests and messages.

4. Protecting Personal & Financial Information Online

Date: October 11, 2025
This class offers practical advice on safe online banking, shopping, and browsing.
Best practices:

  • Use secure (HTTPS) websites.

  • Never share financial info via email.

  • Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi.

5. Recognizing and Reporting Fraud

Date: October 18, 2025
In the final class, participants will learn what steps to take if they suspect fraud.
Key guidance:

  • Report incidents to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or local police.

  • Contact your bank immediately.

  • Talk to family or caregivers – seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

  Accessible Learning for All

Whether you prefer attending in person or from the comfort of your home, this program ensures all seniors can benefit. iPads will be provided for those attending in person and lacking access to digital tools.
